My family calls me the SPF Police and by now they’re pretty used to my patrolling the doors before they leave for a day out into the blistering summer sun. These days, I find myself covering whatever I can to avoid general sun damage and the onset of wrinkles but luckily there are so many great stylish options.
Have you heard of Everything But Water? I found this enchanting boutique at the Westfield Garden State Plaza in NJ and was lured inside at the prospect of finding beach/resort wear and accessories that weren’t run of the mill as the store windows suggested. I immediately fell in love with the streamlined decor of halogen lit white lacquered displays and buff blue walls…maybe the famed Benjamin Moore Palladian Blue I mentioned in my House of Turquoise post?
I can tell you, the selection did not disappoint! With so many beautiful designs, the inventory is quite extensive:
I went with this white/gold laced empire waisted cover up:
It’s like a translucent armor that diffuses the sun’s harsh rays and I often wear it with white capris and a white camisole underneath during the day. In fact, I wear all of my cover ups and tunics this way in the summer when I’m not wearing them over a bathing suit. I like how it has angel wings when you extend your arm. Pictured here with MY angel!
Here are some of the other designs I fell in love with…
I love the lingerie feel and the crochet trim of this classic black tunic:
This belted turquoise tie dye chiffon number is now on sale (lucky YOU!):
A Trina Turk fan, I instantly gravitated toward this great transitional piece:
This skirted tunic allows you to easily run from the beach or pool to a lunch date or quick stop to the grocery store in covered style! I also adore caftans for the same reason. Here’s one of my longtime favorites:
THIS silk caftan below leaves me breathless…and so does the price! A girl can dream, can’t she?
Not to worry, there’s a great selection of other affordable caftans on the site.
Since I have a love/hate relationship with the sun, I never head out to the beach or pool without one of my prized hats. My most recent purchase at Lord & Taylor, this Lauren Ralph Lauren two toned bamboo O ring number is my new favorite with its super wide brim that’s like having your own portable mini umbrella.
I tend to get sun spots very easily which are impossible to get rid of and my nose really needs its own sun shield. Can you say Rudolph? But beware: this hat is great for sitting, not walking with multiple totes across a crowded beach!
Then there’s my tried and true Helen Kaminski straw favorite that I’ve had for over 20 years:
I loved this braided raffia hat so much I agreed to accept it as compensation for modeling it in a bikini in the frigidly over air conditioned SAKS Fifth Avenue NYC back in my early twenties! It’s the most durable hat I own and it can handle getting wet and keeps its shape even under duress! It has a simple string that ties around the top to keep it secure, even when I’m riding at full speed out on the boat!
OMG! Can you believe this CARINYA CLASSIC 5 style is still available?! Mine came with the classic black grosgrain ribbon but you can purchase the ivory pearl version. Apparently, it now comes with a special 30th anniversary gold enamel seed logo on the ribbon. You can visit the Helen Kaminski site directly to view.
This one’s next in the shopping queue:
This Florabella white lace topped wide brimmed beauty is so elegant! What do you think?
In addition to hats, I also have a long standing love affair with sunglasses, which also serve as my permanent headband year round when they’re not protecting my eyes.
On intensely sunny days, I always go for oversized styles with dark lenses which kill two birds with one stone: they keep me from squinting and getting the dreaded furrowed brow and also aid in keeping the delicate skin around my eyes from wrinkling prematurely. Plus, they hide my eyebrows! I simply won’t buy shades that leave my eyebrows lurking. Are you with me on this? Do you have a preference? Silly, maybe, but it’s what looks best on my long face.
But on less than perfect beach days, I don my trusted Marc by Marc Jacobs aviator style sunnies that I’m pictured wearing with my Helen Kaminski raffia hat above. With minimal coverage gradient lenses, they’re perfect and just so happen to be polarized!
I’m now on a mission to overhaul my entire collection to include only pairs with polarization, as they are truly superior, cutting all of the glare that strains your eyes and allowing you to open your eyes real wide, therefore reducing the squint!
It’s unfortunate that most of the upscale designer shades don’t have polarized lenses and most of the companies that specialize in them don’t really offer styles I prefer: too sporty! So now I’m on the hunt…if you have any recommendations, I’m all ears!
Well I’ve saved the best for last. The most important sun warrior of all is the sunscreen we put on our skin. I’m partial these days to Beautycounter’s Protect All Over Broad Spectrum 30 SPF sunscreen which protects against both UVA & UVB rays and is free of the dangerous chemicals Oxybenzone & Benzophenone which are widely used chemical sun blockers.
Beautycounter uses Zinc Dioxide and Titanium Dioxide which are effective and safe natural mineral sun blockers. Plus it’s lightweight, easy to rub in with no streaking, packed with powerful antioxidants and great for the entire family. What’s better than that?
Maybe the fact that Beautycounter’s Protect sunscreen made the EWG’s (Environmental Working Group) Safest Sunscreen list for 2014 & 2015!
Don’t forget to use a face foundation or tinted moisturizer with SPF coverage as well. Beautycounter just launched its Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 which is fabulously silky smooth!
You can shop the Protect All Over Sunscreen and Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer here:
Did you know that sunscreens are NOT waterproof and such claims are FALSE? Check out the EWG’s Sun Safety Guide for quick tips on finding the safest sunscreens. Here are some general guidelines:
- No Spray Sunscreens
- No Super-High SPFs
- No Oxybenzone and Other Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals
- No Retinyl Palmitate
- No Combined Sunscreen/Bug Repellents
- No sunscreen towelettes or powders
- No Tanning Oils
Wishing you a glorious and protected summer!
