Are you ready to PLAY BIG both personally and spiritually? Tara Mohr’s book PLAYING BIG: Find Your Voice, Your Mission, Your Message, is haunting me.
A women’s leadership expert, Yale Scholar & women’s activist, Tara shares her story of seeing the same thing over and over in her coaching practice: Brilliant women whose ideas and leadership could change the world, except they didn’t see, believe in, or trust their own brilliance.
Her calling became helping women play bigger to reach their full potential as leaders & change-agents for the sake of their own fulfillment and for the sake of the world.
Wow. Eyes wide open, you have my full attention Tara!
Below is an insightful podcast with Tara Mohr on moving through criticism, finding your voice and embracing your calling. It’s lengthy but at 37:37 Tara focuses on finding your calling: that special piece of work that is yours to do in the world. She says your calling shows up as a persistent vision of how something in the world should be different – a vivid pain or frustration with the status quo.
She is quick to point out that our calling can be as simple as helping another person or a moment in time where you are fiercely committed to getting a specific job done. Your calling need not be a 20 year career or a single life’s purpose. Not everyone can be a Steve Jobs or Mother Theresa and sometimes it takes a lifetime for us to connect the dots from our numerous callings along the way.
Tara says it best:
Our circumstances are always changing, with different opportunities presenting themselves at various stages in our lives. What we can offer others as a young adult is certainly different than what we can offer as seasoned adults. The challenge is to hush our inner critic that stops us from acting upon and investing all of our energy into our calling.
Tara wants women to know the power and impact of our own voices, to courageously express ourselves and PLAY BIG!
This interview is part of Jonathan Fields’ Good Life Project where he shares the wisdom of world class teachers, artists, entrepreneurs, leaders, and stories of ordinary people telling extraordinary stories with their lives. He started it all with one simple question directed at various of movers & shakers: “What is the good life?” And the answers they gave became a movement to transform the way we live our lives.
I’m hooked on his series like a deer on salt. Jonathan’s videos and latest podcast series are like private TED Talks but with the aim of helping people craft more engaged, deeply connected and vital lives. He’s all about inspiring people to PLAY BIG! You can view his entire library featuring luminaries like Seth Godin, Vani Hari (a.k.a. Food Babe), Kris Karr, Brené Brown, Leo Babauta (Zen Habits founder), Marie Forleo and Danielle Laporte here.
Speaking of Marie Forleo, (yes I’m a fan, as I’ve referred to her in several posts) she reminds us that:
Marie coaches entrepreneurial women on creating a business and life they’ll love but her wisdom and focus on authenticity applies to women in general. Like Jonathan Fields, Marie also features compelling in depth interviews with visionaries like Richard Branson, Jason Silva, and Tony Robbins who PLAY BIG and inspire us with their brilliance and out of the box lives.
Another coach I find compelling is Danielle LaPorte. Her Desire Map Guide to Creating Goals With Soul is uber popular now, as it focuses on holistic life planning by harnessing the most powerful driver behind our aspirations: how we want our lives to FEEL!
The Desire Map series includes many empowerment and manifesting tools to help you PLAY BIG: workbook, planner, CD’s, workshops, retreats, book clubs, & community groups. Oh, and I can’t get enough of Danielle’s #truthbombs which are now represented in a special jewelry collaboration with Dogeared:
On the point of manifesting our desires, I’m wondering if you’ve read Deepak Chopra’s The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire…
I found it very enlightening as it beckons us to pay close attention to the little coincidences we experience because they provide clues to the facets of our lives that need attention and serve as a guide to inspire and shape our lives.
Deepak states that when we live in awareness and appreciation of these coincidences and direct our energy toward toward them, they multiply and provide a synchronicity that comes from the realm of pure potential and infinite possibility. This realm, he says, is non local where space and time don’t exist and contains a flow of energy, information and intelligence.
Once we apply our intentions to this synchronicity, we can create specific outcomes in our lives, or the spontaneous fulfillment of desire. Personally I don’t believe in coincidences as accidents, but see them as small miracles that are part of the thread that is the interrelatedness of all things.
So coincidentally, I came across The Prayer of Jabez at a time when I was really struggling with finding my purpose and not sure how to proceed on my life path. Have you heard of this book?
It’s a small but powerful book that dares you to PLAY BIG by challenging your faith and your belief systems. Think The Secret but more compact. Based on an unknown Bible hero and his simple prayer, The Prayer of Jabez is about what happens when ordinary Christians commit to reaching for an extraordinary life. We all want a bigger vision for our lives, right?
It’s simple. Author and Christian leader Bruce Wilkinson says all you have to do is ask God to bestow you with His best that He has in mind for you and to ask it with all your heart. By doing so, it will change your legacy, release His miraculous power in your life, bring supernatural blessings and lavish on you His honor and delight. It’s only what you believe will happen and therefore do next that will release God’s power for you and bring about a life change.
The Prayer of Jabez is from the Bible:
And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying,
“Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil,
that I may not cause pain!”
So God granted him what he requested.
1 Chronicles 4:10 (NKJV)
The book goes into detail on the implications of each part of the verse in your prayer:
Little Prayer, Giant Prize! So why not ASK?
Oh, that You would bless me indeed: This implies that we place a radical trust in God, throwing ourselves into the river of His will and purpose for our lives. Seeking God’s blessings in this way is the ultimate act of worship. Total surrender. God’s bounty is limited only by us, not by His resources, power, or willingness to give.
Living large for God
and enlarge my territory: This is where you ask God to enlarge your life so you can expand your opportunities and influence to make a greater impact for Him. You’re basically saying help me to help YOU! Send me someone who needs what I can offer, a divine appointment per se. This in itself is a way of honoring God’s will for you and represents the invitation of God’s intervention to make something happen that normally wouldn’t.
The touch of greatness
that Your hand would be with me: This implies we should be dependent upon God, to walk with Him and truly live by faith. Your surrender turns into His unlimited opportunity and power for exponentially expanding your blessings. Even when attempting feats that go against common sense or appear guaranteed for failure, God can surprise us with his divine hand if we ask. Once we turn away from God’s hand, we open ourselves to sinful temptations.
Keeping the legacy safe
and that You would keep me from evil: This is a brilliant strategy for sustaining a blessed life. As you receive supernatural blessings and grow in your faith, you may find yourself the target of opposition and even oppression from others who feel threatened by your dedication to God. To stay out of the arena of distraction and temptation and guard your spiritual investment from the pain and grief that evil brings, you must ask for God’s steadfast protection.
